 Why Choose Eco-Friendly Packaging?

Posted on May 15, 2018 by Ash Bennett

Choosing eco-friendly packaging is not difficult if you understand the materials that your supplier is using to create your take-out cups and boxes. It helps to have a knowledge of some of the types of materials that paper suppliers use so that you will be able to make the best selection that is earth-friendly.

One of the things that cafe owners have to think about is the type of packaging to use for take-out items. Most business owners feel a certain level of responsibility to protect the environment by choosing the right packaging. In fact, companies that do this are taking an active role in being a “green-friendly” establishment.

How to Choose Eco-Friendly Packaging

  • Paper bags– Paper bags are one of the most commonly used items for takeout foods. You can put hot or cold food items in these bags, and they usually come in both brown and white colors. They are recyclable and can be reused by customers after they take their items home.
  • Cellophane bags– Cellophane bags can be used for things that you want the customers to be able to see through the container. They are made of recyclable materials and can be turned into a recycle center after customers have used them.
  • Paper carry bags– Paper carry bags are often used to place multiple small items that the clients are taking home.  Use this type of bag for pastries, candies, and other items. They are completely recyclable so that you keep waste to a minimum.
  • Disposable Cups– Disposable cups come in a variety of shapes and sizes as well as designs. When purchasing coffee cups, make sure you buy containers that are well-insulated and can hold hot liquid without endangering your customers when they take it home. You should also find lids that fit the cup perfectly to avoid spills. Finally, make sure the disposable cups you choose are recyclable. Most disposable containers are recyclable, but you need to know the type of material you are getting to be certain.
  • Plastic juice cups Use plastic milk or juice containers for cold or lukewarm beverages. You should never serve hot liquid in plastic cups as it can leech out chemicals that can be dangerous to your customers. Avoid this problem by choosing insulated paper cups for hot beverages while serving cold drinks in plastic containers.
  • Sundae and Gelato cups– If you serve ice cream sundaes and gelato or yogurt in your coffee shop, make sure to find appropriate take-out containers for these menu items as well. Choosing the right type of cups to hold your ice cream treats is important so, make sure and ask your supply company if they are eco-friendly before you buy.
